Sherwin Poon

Unlike most Singaporean youth who take the academic route to their careers, Sherwin chose an unorthodox one - his dream of becoming a chef. His parents Melvin and Esther started off trying to talk him out of it.

Academic Excellence brought out the best in him

Esther worried all through her son’s O level year. He was unfocused about school, so she was frequently checking in with church leaders to see if he was studying. But ultimately, they were encouraged by the structure church provided - study hours her son was required to clock in order to keep attending services, and friends who pushed him to excel. Sherwin gratefully credits church with giving him confidence, but also teaching him discipline and to love learning.

A Coveted Internship in France

In Year 3 of Culinary and Catering Management at Temasek Polytechnic, Sherwin was one of only two students given a 6-month apprenticeship under Michellin Star Chef David Mollicone. In 2019, He started his own home-based fine dining experience business Saison De Vie that has received rave reviews, making his parents proud. Melvin says his son has grown in skills and into a responsible and faithful member of their family. Despite knowing how tough the restaurant business is, Sherwin’s maturity, commitment and drive assures them. They are now 100% supportive of his passion!
